Why cycling is so healthy

Why cycling is so healthy

Cycling burns calories and relieves the joints. Important: sit correctly, tighten, and check the bike regularly.
78 percent of Germans have a bike, an average of two per household. Around a third use the bike daily or several times a week, two thirds less often. This was the result of the bike monitor in 2017.

Cyclists benefit from every little trip. Not only because they save gasoline costs and protect the climate. Above all, cyclists get their bodies busy. If you step on the pedals regularly, you will strengthen the heart's pump function, break down excess love handles, strengthen muscles and lungs, and usually lighten your mood.

Positive effects of cycling on health

The endurance sport continuously challenges the heart and circulation and stimulates the metabolism. Cycling scores - compared to other endurance sports - with another plus: "It relieves the joints because the bike bears the body weight," says Professor Helmut Lötzerich from the Institute for Outdoor Sport and Environmental Research at the German Sport University Cologne.
Therefore a donkey is particularly suitable for older and overweight people. In addition, the even movement tightens the muscles more cheaply than jogging, for example. Anyone who travels at around 15 kilometers per hour consumes an average of around 400 kilocalories per hour. However, the calorie consumption varies depending on body weight, age, level of difficulty of the tour and headwind.

Cycling properly

According to experts, many people don't cycle ideally. They build up pace with heavy gears and then roll in front of them, pedal again a few times and roll again. Lötzerich advises that it is much more effective for fitness and at the same time more joint-friendly.
Also important: the correct sitting position. If your buttocks or genital area feels numb, your neck hurts or your wrists tingle, then you should go to a bicycle dealer. "Often the handlebar or saddle height is set incorrectly," explains Stephanie Krone, spokeswoman for the General German Bicycle Club (ADFC). For more reasons on how to adjust the wheel correctly and sit on it so that nothing hurts, read here: Cycling without pain.

Regular bike check

"Check the lights and brakes regularly," says Krone. If the brake lever can be moved far towards the handlebar before the brakes grip, you should check the brake cables and replace them if necessary. To do this, the brake must be adjusted. Once a year - preferably in winter or spring - you should your bike to " heart and kidneys can check or check", experts advise. In addition to worn brakes, the tires can also become porous. Fragile, cracked areas indicate this.

The right bike clothing

Even if only around 30 percent of cyclists wear a helmet: it is important because it protects the head in the event of a fall. Pay attention to the TÜV test seal when purchasing. Cycling pants or shorts have the advantage that they often have a padded insert that cushions your buttocks. Special gloves prevent pressure points and blisters on the hands. Breathable t-shirts and jackets prevent heat build-up and dry quickly. When choosing your clothes, always take the wind into account, which can cause chills despite the warm temperatures. Take enough to drink - preferably water or a diluted fruit juice spritzer.

If you longer any sport have driven, then you can be sure call it checked by a doctor beforehand.
